New Year’s Eve is one thing. Heck they even made a movie about it but New Year’s Eve’s Eve is something untapped and awesome. Kirsten and Graham’s wedding was expertly held at the Pickering Barn in Issaquah Washington. A few years back these two came from seemingly opposite sides of the universe to meet at a Mariner’s game. Graham learned to love baseball from his time at Cambridge and Kirsten,...

There are a couple of days during the year that have special meaning. Days like Christmas Day, Valentine’s Day, Independence Day and of course New Year’s Day. New Year’s holds many meanings within it. It can be a sad goodbye to the year past with all its celebrations and accomplishments. It is also a welcomed hello to many new beginnings. It served as the perfect stage to Ben and Vi’s New Year’s...

It’s really cool when you meet a couple and you have something in common that most people don’t. We all have 11 fingers. Just kidding… it turns out that we all have spent some extensive time in Southeast Asia. It was great breaking from the normal wedding talk to discuss were we’ve gone and what experiences we’ve had abroad. Since Josh and Celeste were getting married in February we figured that...

When I moved to Oregon I remember going to the coast for the first time. I remember thinking to myself, ”This is the most opposite beach weather ever”. It was in the spring so it was kind of cool and windy. Coming from more Southern states, this was such an anomaly. After a couple of years I’ve gotten used to it and have actually come to appreciate the dedication by which Northwesterners enjoy...

I met Kellene and Matt at my favorite bakery one night. Off the bat I could tell these two were easy going and some of the nicest people you can ever meet. We discussed the details of the wedding and how it was going to be Thanksgiving weekend. An image kept popping into my head and I had to spill the beans. I kept imagining them being announced into the reception by triumphantly running through...

I am always amazed at couples who have to spend massive amounts of time apart yet still keep their love thriving. Chelsea and Anthony is that couple. Anthony residing on the east coast while Chelsea is in Portland. Even though they are apart, they seem so comfortable with each other. We decided to do their Engagement Session in Downtown Portland because they wanted something to contrast their...

This was just a completely sweet and awesome affair. Vista Hills is one of my favorite venues. It’s intimate and has a beautiful view of the valley. On this particular Autumn wedding day, Vista Hills hit one out of the park. Troy and Kristi are awesome. If there were wedding jitters I didn’t see it…they were totally relaxed and were having a good time. Troy wanted to see Kristi for the first...

During the speeches, Judy said something that I think most aptly describes Judy and John and their new family. She said that a theme in their relationship was ”Better Together”. She continued on to say the same thing about the newly joined families. That they were all now better together. I could totally see that in the smiles of both family and friends as they celebrated this union....

Sometimes we as photographers get lucky. We meet people who are supposed to be our ”clients” but very quickly become our friends. I was actually first introduced to Vanessa’s family when I was planning to shoot her sisters wedding. Meeting Ken and Mary at the 1st wedding I was instantly amazed by how loving and happy they were for their children. The wedding went great and I was sooo looking...

There are those who are joyful. Then there are those who are so happy and joyful that it infects your own mood making your day a little brighter. It’s easy to see why Neil and Kristen are together. They are a joyful force not seen anywhere else in the universe. If they were space travelers they could make Pluto turn into Florida. Weather is always a factor in the Northwest. On wedding days, they...

Any wedding that includes Balls of Flame, a Sword and Square Dancing automatically is in the running for the best wedding ever award, the ”Guapo”. It may be unfair but having a wedding outside the immediate proximity of Portland adds considerable points to your chances. Meeting with Nick and Laura, I knew that their wedding was going to be an awesome affair. A. We were starting at a house that...

Engagement sessions are so much fun. Not that weddings are not..it’s just you get to photograph couples without the time pressure of a ceremony or a cake cutting. It’s just walking and talking, getting to know each other and me trying to figure out what makes them tick as a couple. Napoon and Manon are definitely interesting. Napoon is from Kenya and they are planning to be wedded there in a...

When it was decided that Nikki and Eric’s engagement session was to be held at Edgefield, I was a little excited. The thing about the Edgefield is that you can find new spaces as well as ones that you’ve gone to a hundred times before and it will still be different. To start, we walked up and down the grape vines bathed in the light of the sun setting. Moving around the property, Nikki and Eric...

Huu and Anh met in the typical way. Boy meets girl in O Chem class. Boy calls friend, telling him he’s met the most beautiful girl in class. Girl doesn’t really remember boy. Boy meets girl again 4 years later in another class. Girl remembers boy. Girl gets sick sends out text. Boy is only one to respond. Boy asks Girl to marry him, Girl says yes and we arrive at the wedding day. Typical right?!...

90 degrees for a wedding isn’t really pleasant. If you are from Scotland and in town for a 90 degree wedding….it’s miserable. Yet, nothing could dampen Andrea and Malcolm’s mood on their wedding day. The first time we worked together, it was polar opposites of their wedding day. We were freezing getting shots on the Burnside Bridge for their Engagement Session. Kilts were abound as Malcolm and...

I observe a lot of context when I shoot a wedding. Taking into consideration the way people acted towards Mollie and based on my conversations with her, she quite possibly could be the sweetest, nicest person of all time. She was beaming while getting ready for the wedding and it was an infectious beam as everyone else around her were feeling the same excitement. Kenny, a Fireman was used to the...

I first met Ashley and Mark on a rainy and wet and cold night. We talked about their wedding while I tried my best to charm their daughter Amelia. Mission, fail. Even though we had a good time, Amelia wanted nothing to do with me. The second time we met, was during their engagement session. Once again I tried to get on Amelia’s good side and it wasn’t happening. I thought, well surely by their...

A chance meeting started this whole thing off. I’m always interested how people meet and it just felt as if Liz and Tony were totally destined to be together. How many people can say that they met at a hostel in Ireland after the hostel screwed up and they had to be put in the same room together. It almost sounds like a movie script. A couple of stops in different states, a cell phone less hike...

I believe that on the wedding day, your attitude dictates 99% on how things are going to go. Rebecca and Eric were so patient and easy going that day and was a true testament on the strength of their relationship with each other and with their friends and family. I’m not saying it was Las Vegas in the middle of summer hot but I would say it was Florida swamp in fall hot. Either way it was a...

There is a place for huge celebratory weddings. Sometimes though, something smaller more intimate match the couple so well it’s uncanny. Meeting Tyson and Jessica in Tyson’s hometown of Cascade Locks instantly made the intimate wedding fit perfectly with them. After a easy going conversation about the wedding, travel and our collective experiences, I departed really excited about the big day....

The last time we met up, it was a sunny bright day in the early spring and it was cold!!! Denny and Michelle pulled up their photographic boot straps we conducted an awesome Engagement Session on the Waterfront. A couple of months later, the wedding day was about the same except for the fact the thermometer read slightly higher… by about 30 or so degrees. Everyone was in good spirits and excited...

The word Awesome came up a lot during this wedding. Ralf’s sister’s toast was quite simply, ”Here’s to Awesomeness!!”. I think that word more than adequately described their wedding day. Summers in Oregon are usually full proof but this year was a little of a gamble. Meeting before the wedding, Ralf said that he just wants it to be about 80 degrees and sunny. He needs to find a career as a...

I’ll borrow some stuff from one of the toasts to start this off. “Two words: A-mazing.” That’s how I would describe this wedding, not only because of the weather and such but because of the people and their obvious enjoyment for the couple. Clark was so dumbfounded when he saw Kari for the first time. He just kept saying, ”Wow…you look so beautiful, wow”. It was funny and endearing at the same...

If we were playing the one word to describe a wedding game I would choose ”Laugh” for Kathy and Matt’s beautiful wedding at Vista Hills Vineyard. From our first meeting I knew what kind of wedding this was going to be. The couple had such an easy way about them and it instantly was friends grabbing drinks after work, just talking about a wedding and not a photographer asking about his clients...

I met Jennifer and Sara a couple of months before the big day. After hanging out with them for a little bit I could tell that they both knew how to have a good time. Sara grew up in a small town and she told me there was going to be a lot of people coming so true to their core, they held their wedding in a private campground near her home town. I don’t think it could have matched more perfectly....

The first time I met Rashid and Laini was for their Engagement Session and I could tell two things right away because I’m a photographer and an FBI profiler on the side. All jokes aside I could tell immediately that one, they had an amazing chemistry together and two, they were very much in love. During the session I also found out that Rashid loved kissing Laini so I threw in a couple more...

I think the moment that can sum up Liza and Denis is when Denis turned around to see Liza in her wedding dress. He turned around, there was a glow followed by quick boisterous laughter and some tears from Liza. I wasn’t sure if she was crying because she was so happy, or if she was crying from laughing so hard. If I had to pick one word to sum them up it would be ”fit”. These two people just...

Enoy and Paul are some of the most kind and patient and positive people I’ve every had the privilege of photographing. During the best man speech, Jimmy said that Enoy could not have a better person that Paul to support her and love her for the rest of their lives. I could see that through all the friends and family attending the wedding from far, very far and near to help the couple celebrate....

So…sometimes, no matter how you plan somethings just kind of go sideways, but more on that later. I met Johnny and Vanessa the Thursday before their Engagement Session at Vanessa’s sister’s wedding. That’s right, I’m keeping it in the family. We decided to start at the Multnomah Falls Lodge in the Gorge and move from there. When we got there, it was packed to the gills with tourist. Nothing...

Beautiful. Beautiful I think is the one word that could summarize the wedding of Heidi and Marts. To begin, the wedding was held at Willamette Valley Vineyards. Next it was a bright and sunny day with the promise of a sunset one should see at least once in their lifetime. After that, the couple was one of the calmest, cool and happy couples I’ve come across in all my years of wedding...

This wedding was so much fun. It was a sunny warm day with a slight breeze and plenty of excitement. The wedding and reception were to be held at the West End Theater but things were supposed to start out at the Paramount Hotel down the street. Meeting Sarah and the girls at the hotel, I snapped some awesome shots of Sarah getting ready taking full advantage of the beautiful weather outside. All...

I’ve said time and time again that cultural weddings are some of my favorites and this one was no exception. Being a photographer you gain certain additional skills along the way. One of them is weather radar reader. I was definitely working the Doppler all morning checking all the weather bureaus to try to plan some outdoor photos. Arriving at Quan’s parents house early that morning, the outlook...
When to have your Ceremony.
I’ve met a ton of couples this year who all share the same question, “What time is the best time to have our ceremony?”. That my friends is a very, very good question. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with an easy answer but I’ll try to go through a couple of scenarios that work for most weddings. Let’s say that you are having your wedding at the coast. Now,...

Weddings at the coast are always a gamble. Especially in September, but Chris and Pamela had the stars align for them because, well, because they are that good. Their wedding was at the Surfsand Resort at Cannon Beach home of the famous “Goonies” rocks or as we locals call it, Haystack Rock. It was such a glorious day with puffy clouds and sunny skies. Walking to Pamela’s room, I could hear the...

A couple of months ago I posted some photos of this great couple. They decided to do their formals before the wedding day to save time and to allow them to take the time to get some really great shots. The session went great! Coming up on the day and meeting with them I knew that the wedding day was going to be an adventure filled with great moments challenging my stamina as we were starting at 7...

Taking place at Hood View Church, one of the things said that stood out for me during this wedding wasn’t when the girls getting ready or during the best people speeches. It was when Karen’s father gave away his daughter. When asked who would give this woman away, he said, “With honor, her mother and I do”. The words were important but it was the tone and absoluteness of his voice. Weddings...
